ABOUT COURSE AND EXAM
The class is held at the Tennessee Hospitality and Tourism Association at 2630 Elm Hill Pike #110, Nashville, TN 37214. Click here for map. On the day of the class, all students must remember to bring their 9th Edition ServSafe Textbook(pictured on left) or rent one from Restaurant Class for $10 and bring a valid government issued photo ID in order to participate in the course. In order to take the online exam each student must set up their ServSafe Account online PRIOR to the class as per the below instructions.
The exam is administered on a laptop computer we provide. There are 90 multiple choice answer questions and a score of 70% is needed to be awarded certification (It means you can miss about 22 questions and still pass). You have two full hours to complete the exam. The average person finishes the exam in about an hour, though some finish in 30 minutes and some take the full two hours. Please keep in mind there is no real correlation between how fast or slow people complete the exam and the pass/failure rate as people work at different rates. After you finish answering the 90 questions you will have an opportunity to review every answer and change any answer you want. After you are 100% satisfied with your answers you will hit the finish key and be notified if you passed the exam immediately. We have to wait until the entire class is done before we can grade the class so you can leave after you're finished and we will email you your score and if you pass, your certificate, the very next day. The certification is valid for 5-years and complies with the Tennessee Department of Health's Person-In-Charge demonstrated food safety knowledge requirement.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR COURSE AND EXAM
Step 1. It's not required to study the textbook prior to coming to class, however we highly recommend it. There are 10 chapters, and if you read two chapters a day it will take five days. At the end of each chapter there are ten study questions to complete and those are similar to those on the test. Those who study textbook beforehand almost always pass the exam and those that fail usually didn't study beforehand.
Step 2. You can access several self graded diagnostic tests, practice tests and practice quizzes and other reference material to review prior to the course on the Study Resources page of our website, www.restaurantclass.com. A good way to tell if you will pass the actual certification is to take the 40-question practice test. IF you score 85% or better that is a great sign you will pass the actual exam. If you score below that, its a a good indication you might fail the actual exam and have to retake it if you want to to be certified.
Step 3. On class day, dress comfortably and in layers and if you wear glasses or readers please bring them.
Step 4. We do not provide any food or beverages. Bring lunch or any snacks or drinks you want. There is a short lunch break and there are several quick service restaurants on Elm Hill Pike.
Step 5. Bring a photo ID.
Step6. Bring or rent the 9th Edition ServSafe Manager Textbook.
Step7. Set up your ServSafe Account prior to class.
Step 8. Our protocols are if you have a fever we will ask you to reschedule and go home and get well. We also ask that before you enter the classroom each time that you wash your hands in the restroom for at least 20 seconds.
